Our Gold Plating Process
Depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of an object is a widely used technique in jewellery-making, due to its aesthetic appeal and protective qualities. The process involves several stages.
Step 1
Cleaning
Firstly, our jewellers will polish and ultrasonically clean your item to remove dirt, oils, dullness of the metal, or fingerprint marks, as these impurities can interfere with the plating process.
Step 2
The Plating Process
Next, your item of jewellery is submerged in an electrolytic solution composed of gold salt and other chemicals.
After being connected to an electric current, the gold ions in the solution are reduced and deposit onto the surface of the jewellery, forming a layer of gold. The duration of this process determines the thickness of the gold layer.
As standard, we apply a minimum of three microns of gold plating, unless otherwise requested, using a premium 18ct yellow gold hard plating solution that ensures a rich, vibrant finish with durability and wear resistance.
Step 3
Finishing Touches
Once the object has been plated to the desired thickness, it is carefully removed from the electroplating bath, rinsed with deionised water to remove any excess chemicals, and dried.

To provide you with a quote for our gold-plating services, we consider several factors:
Estimate Strip and Polish: We need to determine the amount of work required to strip and polish your jewellery item to remove any residual oil, dirt, or oxidation that may be left on the piece, which can inhibit the plating process. Furthermore, scratches and other imperfections on the surface can become more noticeable after the plating process. We ensure a clean surface for a flawless, uniform finish by thoroughly cleaning and polishing your item before adhering it to the gold.
Measure Surface Area: Our gold plating process utilises genuine 18ct gold, which has a specific cost per unit weight. Therefore, we will need to roughly measure the surface area of the piece to gauge the amount of gold required.
Check Gold Market Price: The current market price of gold fluctuates and impacts the total cost of the process. We regularly check market rates to give the most accurate quote.
Quantity Discounts: We provide significant discounts on bulk orders of ten or more items for gold plating of the same design.
By combining all these factors, we provide a transparent quote for gold plating your jewellery.
If you would like a quote, please fill out our online form and include an image of the item(s) you wish to have gold-plated. Alternatively, you are welcome to visit our workshop in person to discuss your project with a member of our team.

Gold plating involves applying a thin layer of gold to the surface of another metal, typically silver or brass, to enhance its appearance and protect it from corrosion. The thickness of the gold layer can vary, and the process is often used to create gold-tone jewellery and decorative items.
